Old Point

Welcome to Old Point

This is where Beaufort's most celebrated antebellum homes are concentrated. The neighborhood contains some of the finest examples of Beaufort Style architecture — a regional vernacular adapted to the hot, humid climate, characterized by wide front porches (piazzas), high ceilings, large windows, and elevated foundations. Many were built by Sea Island cotton planters in the prosperous decades before the Civil War.

Notable landmarks include the John Mark Verdier House, the Tidalholm estate (famously used in The Big Chill and The Great Santini), and the Lewis Reeve Sams House. The area is part of the Beaufort Historic District, listed on the National Register, and subject to the Board of Architectural Review oversight.
